The hospital garden's forest garden, Ulleraker, Uppsala
Principal: Uppsala municipality
Design vegetation: Philip Weiss & Martin Gustafsson
Start year: 2024
Surface: 4500 kvm
Hospitalsträdgården's forest garden is located at the southern end of Hospitalsträdgården in Ulleråker, about 2 km south of Stadsträdgården. The forest garden began to be laid out in the spring 2025 and was inaugurated in May 2026. The forest garden connects to the Trädgårdslandet playground. The landscape was built with excavated material from the site. All planting areas are covered with 0-8 natural sand. The vegetation is intended to complement the existing edible vegetation in the Hospital garden. Therefore, fewer apples and pears were planted and more unusual fruits- and nut trees, as several named varieties of walnut (Juglans regia), chestnut (Castanea × crenata), mullbär (Morus spp.) and quince (Cydonia oblonga). Also rarities such as Chinese pepper tree (Zanthoxylum simulans) and asimina (Asimina triloba) are planted. The heart of the planting is formed by a walnut tree of the 'Buccaneer' variety, which is planted in the middle of a wooden deck, surrounded by various plum relatives (Prunus spp.) and a flowering soil layer. The plant beds were sown with our self-composed flowering seed mixture with elements of green manure plants and perennials that will be able to remain for many years.
