Malmaberg's food forest, Vasteras
Principal: Västerås city
Design vegetation: Philip Weiss & Martin Gustafsson in collaboration with Peter Korn
Start year: 2021
Surface: 6000 kvm
Malmaberg's food forest was created to create an entrance to the district forest in Malmaberg. A row of fruit trees were planted on the open spaces, as apples (Malus domestica), pear (Pyrus communis), Russian plum (Prunus × rossica), quince (Cydonia oblonga) and mulberries (Morus sp.). The border between the forest and the orchard was blurred by thinning out the forest edge and planting forest-dwelling species such as Turkish hazel (Corylus colurna), hazel, (Corylus avellana), Cornus mas (Cornus mas) and pimpernöt (Staphylea pinnata) in the transition zone. Also walnut (Juglans regia) and chestnut (Castanea sativa) planted. The ground layer was designed and laid out by Peter Korn. The park was inaugurated in the autumn 2022 and the city of Västerås was awarded the municipal prize for the project.
