Time for invintring

Forest Garden Year is coming to an end and today we completed preparations for invintringen. What does the work of Putt Myra Forest Garden?

Firstly, it is about protecting seedlings against possible pests. There are plenty of elk and deer in the area and sometimes you see hares also. All of these have a penchant for diluting shoots, especially from plants belonging rosväxterna, such as cherry, plums, apples and all kinds of currants. I forest garden at Holma has responded to the threat by fencing the entire forest garden with wildlife fencing. Rather, we have to protect each tree individually, above all to maintain the open and inviting nature such as forest gardens have.

We use both the chicken wire and plastic to protect plants, depending on their growth habits. Uppstammade tree gets plastic tubing and straggling bushes protected with chicken wire. Often sticks out branch tips from the nets that deer love to chew the, but there has not been a problem in most cases, and we get uppstammade into the bargain.

A more passive measure we have used is to let all the sly at the edge of forest garden new shoots every year that we allow to remain until spring. Deer and elk like Rosaceae, but they love the soft shoots of willow and willow as it is most of the edges of fields. We "sacrifice" thus slyet to protect the plants we are afraid of.

Finally, it is also to protect the most sensitive plants from cold. We do this primarily by raking up leaves around these plants to create an extra isolerlager to cover web. This allows the roots to grow a little longer in the fall and the frost does not penetrate as deeply into the soil. Soil temperature is smoothed out simply.

It is these simple tricks we've used the past three winters to get our plants to survive the winter and besides vole damage, it has not had any problems with either pests or call winters so far.

  • Heartnote'Imshu`har I had many years now the coast of Roslagen zone III in a position completely open to fierce north wind. No damage at all despite the occasional severe winter. The variety'Kalmar'har frostbitten peaks in a more protected position. Have not protected with leaves, it tends not to be as deep frost which.

    • Exciting! Thank you for sharing your experience. We just ordered a couple of heart-nuts of the variety Kalmar, but maybe we should switch to a 'Imshu'? How has the fruit set has been for you?

      • Only flowering than. I think they are hardier to not fertilize as much, Perhaps I have been too stingy, they are just a couple of meters in height. `Kalmar'har had maps which then fell… perhaps needed another pollination. There is too little experience to share in the progress of new species and varieties so far north. Ripe chestnuts, peaches and walnuts I have received, even figs any single year, sometimes, sweet almond bloom, but shed their small maps. Apricot trees are not persistent. Sötrönnar, hybridhasslar and some other tests, I also, but long before we can evaluate.

      • Några år sent men jag undrar var du beställde dina hjärtnötsträd? 🙂 Jag är på jakt efter ett hjärtnötsträd ‘Imshu’.
