With us tend bärtry (Lonicera caerulea var. edulis) be the absolute earliest berries produced in the forest garden. As the earliest we have reaped the first berries by the end of May,, but normally ripen fruits in June. Today I tasted the first of this year and will mature as in the next four to six weeks. Bärtry growing all over the northern part of the Northern Hemisphere. The name of tasty varieties have been bred from several different species of honeysuckle (Lonicera) and to distinguish generally between Japanese and Russian varieties. With us are above all the Russian varieties in trade, which is more well adapted to our climate.

In recent years a lot has happened on bärtryfronten and Bush has become something of a fashion plant that everyone should have. That they ripen so early, of course, a reason, bärtry but is also one of the most salubrious berries we can grow in our climate and many cultivars are hardy till cultivation zone VII. Speaking cultivars, there were a few to choose from when I became interested in bärtry around 2010. Today the range is the least unmanageable. Many nurseries provides 20 cultivars or more. Bärtry considered self sterile (we have a solitary shrub that does not seem to know this), so you always need to have at least two different varieties to get the fruit. But how do you choose the right kind in this maze of difficult to pronounce name resorts?

In my own judgment, I have focused on four different criteria: The expected harvest quantity per bush, compatibility with petitioners varieties, what time of year the fruits ripen and bärstorlek. Although it is perhaps the harvested quantity that is important, it is more fun to eat a little less comprehensive than many small berries. An excellent compilation of 20 Name sorts of properties that have been made by Horticulture Farm Tadeusz Kusibab Poland has been a great help to make this selection. The table below shows the varieties I have against these criteria have chosen for my own plantations. Aurora (which is by far the most high-yielding variety, which also has large berries) Honeybee and are developed by the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, while the other varieties are produced in Russia by FGUP "Bakczarskoje” Rosselhoz Akademii i Bakchar, outside Novosibirsk in Siberia. Varieties Bakczarskij Velikan (The giant from Bakchar) less yielding than the other varieties, but is the best choice among the early varieties, which is generally less yielding. Even my favorite Morena I have included to show how much variation between the different name resorts are.

Bra artikel.
Good tips!
When I searched varieties, I read the same thing, but somewhere I read that here in the south( Halland for me) so can the Canadian varieties better fit. Do you have any experience with these?( has been sloppy enough not checked where your timber garden is located) Have found at Blomqvist nursery but will unfortunately not remember where I read post.
Hi!
While the Canadian grades are based largely on the Russian plant, so the difference is not so great between Canadian and Russian varieties anymore, especially if you choose one of the newer varieties. I have learned quite a lot about blåbärstry since I wrote this and more current information can be found in our book “Forest Garden”, where we also lists many more varieties than this.
