Nötodling in Sweden – From 7: Other nuts

There are a number of nut trees that are not among the most common and important for us here in Sweden in terms of yield potential and resistance, but which nevertheless should be mentioned for completeness before in a future post will look at the nutritional content of various nuts.

Hickory belongs just as Walnut Tree family Juglandaceae (Juglandaceae). Two species can be grown in Sweden, Pecan (C. illinoinensis) and Shagbark Hickory (C. ovata) as well as hybrids between C. illinoisensis hickory, and other species known for Hican in English. Touch Nöten said to be on the limit regarding resistance in Sweden (it needs warm summers, winters are less of a problem) and Shagbark Hickory should be grown for wine-growing 4. Our little Shagbark Hickory has done a couple of years in the forest garden, but is not higher than 10 cm. Hopefully follows the things that lie in the literature, namely that they grow most down during the first years. Hickory Tree becomes large and relatively old trees are on display in the Bergius Botanic Garden in Stockholm. Hickory is grown more for the fine wood than for the nuts. The nuts are relatively large, but the kernels are small. They are brews and the trees have a tendency to produce fruit only every three years. Name Places of hickory start producing fruit after 10-12 years after planting [1].

Almonds (Prunus) is botanically no nuts but drupes, but often colloquially regarded as the. They are hardy in the southern parts of the country and their hardiness mainly limited by their bloom very early in the year when there is a high risk of frost damage to flowers and then there is also a shortage of pollinators. Under good conditions, the almond trees give a few kilos of nuts (without shell) per year and trees. They usually begin to bear fruit after 4 to 6 years [1].

Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is a nut trees with us most famously beautiful park trees with unusual leaves that look prehistoric out. The tree is hardy to cultivation zone 2. Ginkgo is dioecious, ie. the need for him- and a honträd for it to be able to produce nuts. Because the flesh around the nuts smell feces planted it usually only staminate plants. In Malmö Castle Park, there is a honträd that during a visit in late October 2013 had given plenty of fruit. The fruits are small, similar pistachios appearance. They need to be cooked in about 15 minutes to become edible. They have a rubbery texture and is rich in starch with a good taste that resembles artichoke hearts.

The yellow fruit is ginkgoträdets nut that is a little chewy in texture, but has a nice taste.

Another dioecious which also belongs to the oldest tree species on Earth is bread tree (Araucaria araucana), originally derived from Chile and Argentina. The tree form large cones that contain a few hundred seeds, which can be cooked by boiling. The challenge with bread spruce is that one does not know if he has a- or female plant when growing them from seed. Then it takes about 25 years before they bear fruit for the first time, so you have to order enough trees if you want to be on the safe side. The nuts are rich in starch and has a good taste. The tree is hardy to cultivation zone 2 in protected areas.

Monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucaria), also known as apskräck is a very old tree species that produce tasty nuts in large cones.

Blomsterkastanj (Xanthoceras sorbifolium) is a small tree can be between 2 and 5 meters high. It blooms profusely and give 1,5 cm large seeds that resemble horse chestnuts in appearance. The plant is possibly resistant to cultivation zone 4, but need a well-drained, sunny habitat. Our two specimens of this species have been stamping for two summers now, despite having one of the best growing sites in the forest garden.

Pimpernötsträd (Staphylea spp.) do not give much nuts but its advantage is that they can produce fruit in deep shade. The fruit is the size of a chick pea with a hard shell. I have found they are very difficult peeled, but once you get the flesh is rewarded with something that tastes the closest to sugar. Last summer I picked a few unripe fruit and it turned out that they went to eat with the skin which then was still quite soft. It is perhaps so one needs to handle the nuts, but unfortunately I have not found any information about it in the literature. S. colchica is the hardiest species in the genus, and can possibly be grown in zone 4. Our two copies have passed their first two winters with flying colors and has even bloomed once, However, without putting fruit. S. pinnata and S. trifolia is hardy to zone 2-3.

Staphylea pinnata (Staphylea spp.) produces lots of small kikärtsstora nuts even in very shady locations.

  • There is a fine ginko trees in Lidköping at Iqbal's squares diagonally opposite Åhlens the magnolias.

  • Something more about almond trees, tips on good sort, tips to keep the frost away at flowering if it will be a cold night? Living in zon 1 although it did frost 2017 To harvest was the worst in living memory. Is it possible to graft almond on wild cherry or krikonträd that bloom early April.
